Job Description:

Where you fit in

The Crude Business Development (BD) organisation is a highly driven team of origination experts focused on delivering high value deals that drive the Crude business strategy forward. The Crude business development team is located across our global offices: London, Nigeria, Dubai, India, Singapore, China, Bahamas, Brazil, Houston and Canada. The scope of the role covers business development for the Crude Desks: Europe, Asia, Africa, Mediterranean, Latin America and Global Freight. By supporting multiple desks, this role has a unique opportunity to generate integrated opportunities that maximises value for the Shell group.

As a Structural Deal Manager, you will leverage your market experience to develop innovative solutions for managing term sheet negotiations and work closely with the trading desks. You are experienced in working on a variety of different financing structures, building financial models and working with counterparties on optimising deal structures.

You are expected to provide leadership of both the financial and commercial aspects of deals in third party discussions which will include government and private sector opportunities. You should be confident in engaging with stakeholders at all levels including the c-suite (CEO/CFO).

What’s the role?

You will also be accountable for the following:

  • Together with Crude Trading Business Development (BD) colleagues, identify and support execution of third-party value-added trading opportunities, both with upstream producers, refineries, logistics/midstream companies and shipping companies.

  • Originate and develop new sources of capital for Structured Trade Finance (STF) deals beyond existing ones (relationship banks), such as private credit funds, family offices, etc. A key target for the role would be to maximise capital efficiency through syndication of existing and future deals.

  • Provide expertise to handle third party discussions on financial aspects of deals.

  • Develop innovative solutions for managing term sheet negotiations using market experience.

  • Support the STF and Treasury team in syndicating existing and future deals to maximise capital efficiency, working to ensure a smooth interface between these teams and other functional partner teams in Trading.

  • Contribute to the coaching and growth of internal BD and finance staff, specifically regarding deal capital structuring and financing.

  • On occasion deliver or support projects that assist the Global BD team, to identify, originate and deliver new opportunities for Crude Trading in line with trading desk strategies (for crude offtake, crude supply or logistics and freight).

This role involves a significant amount of cross-business and cross-functional projects work, therefore an "Enterprise First" and collaborative approach is key along with good organisation and influencing skills. Ability to act autonomously and with initiative is essential. We also expect:

  • Deployment of the appropriate Project Management skills and applying due process must be married to the real-time demands of the Trading environment where the external competition for new business can be fierce.

  • Show ability in working with different cultures and personalities. They will need to build solid relationships with external and internal stakeholders at different organisational levels across their region of responsibility and use these to deliver value in Business Development projects, with a particular focus on the financial solutions required to deliver these projects.

  • Demonstrate ability to be inquisitive and learn quickly from others, enabling the interface manager to demonstrate credibility and a deep understanding of upstream, downstream, trading and freight activities in the regions in front of internal stakeholders is critical.

  • Be tenacious and able to cope with failure outside of their control and with the inevitable lack of direct connection between effort and results, consistent with a role of this nature.

What we need from you

We are keen to hear from candidates with the following:

  • Relevant Finance, Banking and/or Business Development experience in the crude oil sector, with proven understanding of structured finance, credit risk and market risks.

  • Evidence of wide delivery and implementation of successful financing projects and associated innovative solutions to meet counterparty needs.

  • Experience in Trading or within a Trading environment and knowledge of the relevant markets and logistics are helpful.

  • A proven willingness to learn quickly, demonstrate curiosity and develop an understanding of Trading.

  • Highly numerate and able to grasp new concepts quickly.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication and influencing abilities. Able to interact with all organisational levels.

  • Ability to build support and consensus across organizational interfaces. Complimented by a strong Shell network.

  • Experienced negotiator, able to handle multiple party negotiations.

  • Strong evidence of commercial acumen and delivery focus.

  • Able to work across different groups to harness ideas and generate solutions or new approaches to the business opportunity

  • Team orientated with the ability to work independently and share knowledge and learnings

  • Resilience in dealing with setbacks.

  • Ability to work with a large range of conflicting priorities– at any one time there may be up to a dozen projects at different stages of maturity to cope with.
