HYBRID ELIGIBILITY
This position works a hybrid schedule, spending time remotely and in the office in Houston, TX. The current hybrid schedule provides flexibility to collaborate in the office Tuesdays through Thursdays and work from home Mondays and Fridays. With our 9/80 feature you get time off every other Friday when you work at least 80 hours over the preceding nine days.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Hess is seeking a Solution Architect to join the Enterprise Architecture group within IT. This role requires a mix of strong technical knowledge around solution development, database modeling, and systems integration, as well as a solid domain understanding of the Well lifecycle, covering all stages from initiation to completion.
The Solution Architect will be the technical focal point from IT working closely with Wells and other central functions on their digital initiatives / projects in the areas of drilling, engineering, and production operations. They will be responsible for performing current state assessment, future state technology road mapping, architecting solutions, and designing integrations with other enterprise systems. Additionally, they will engage in scouting and evaluating future technology solutions crucial to our digital transformation journey. Furthermore, this role will provide guidance and mentorship to the citizen developers in these functions facilitating enhancements such as reporting, automation, and low-code/no-code development. The Solution Architect will also collaborate with Enterprise Architecture, Cyber and Operations teams to understand and apply the technical assurance guidelines and security principles to ensure that architecture deliverables meet/exceed these standards.
The ideal candidate for this role is not just technically proficient—understanding of software development lifecycle and a spectrum of traditional / cloud-native technologies—but also a strong communicator with a keen business sense. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Relationship Management:
- Establish and maintain positive business and IT relationships, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration across various levels of leadership, IT functions and contracted service providers.
- Closely work with application teams to gather and refine requirements from Central Functions and ensure these are clearly conveyed to wider IT teams in various forums.
- Work closely with other IT teams to understand the functional and strategic needs of the organization and design future state data flows and reference architecture that align with IT strategies and best practices.
- Provide best practices and guidance to Citizen Developers within the Business Functions.
- Ensure that any proposed future state solutions align with Cyber Security and Enterprise Architecture practices and guidelines and are accounted for within Application Team plans and resource capacities.
Business Alignment:
- Employ a methodological approach to analyze the existing well delivery processes using varied tools and techniques like workshops, document analysis, process mapping, data modeling and user surveys.
- Conduct a comprehensive task and workflow analysis to thoroughly document the current state of systems and processes.
- Collaborate with business leaders and application teams to identify and scope opportunities, outline potential value and ROI, and identify risks and constraints contributing to a proposed future state.
- Understand business requirements for data and ensure that solutions meet this need in an elegant manner. Create functional and technical specifications for process implementations.
Technical Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Application and Infrastructure teams to ensure proposed solution architectures meet/fit within IT guidelines and modify proposed solution diagrams as needed to accommodate.
- Translate requirements into process architecture views and the functional designs of solutions and document all solution architecture design and analysis work to identify cross-function processes and identify opportunities for integrations.
- Employ a comprehensive approach to leveraging and proposing IT solutions that are both secure and fit for purpose, incorporating technologies such as Azure IoT Hub, Event Hubs, Stream Analytics, Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, PowerApps, API Services, and Power BI Reporting.
- Understanding of technical capabilities to address different data types / frequencies (batched, real-time etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 10+ years of experience in IT, with 2+ years in a Solutions Architect or similar role.
- Strong understanding of Oil & Gas industry process and standards – particularly in drilling, maintenance & reliability, and production operations.
- Functional experience with Well life cycle application systems used in planning and operations (e.g., Peloton, Landmark and/or Schlumberger software suites, etc.).
- Extensive knowledge of relevant technologies and practices, including cloud computing (Azure IoT Hub, Event Hubs, Stream Analytics, APIM etc.), data governance & database systems / application (Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, Purview etc.), Azure best practices, Reporting (Power BI, Spotfire) and their applications in O&G.
- Experience in process design, architecting data-driven solutions, integrations; and ability to prepare functional and technical design documents (system implementation and support plan, design, install, integrate, configure)
- Expertise in the SDLC process, especially preparing requirements, solution envisioning and design, and process management.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities; with an ability to work independently and with minimal guidance.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
