Job Description:

Position Purpose

This Legal Counsel Intellectual Property (IP) position will be an integral part of the Legal Technology team in Legal, providing a unique expertise in IP law.

The role is to independently provide commercially focused IP legal support to Shell businesses globally.

Accountabilities:

  • Providing IP agreements and commercial legal advice, drafting and negotiating with internal and external parties regionally and globally technology-related agreements, including technology licensing, collaborations, IP assignments and IP support in acquisition & divestment and joint venture projects.

  • Ensuring legal considerations and impact of decisions, including mitigation of legal risks, are identified.

  • Act as the subject matter expert for US IP law technology matters and be able to address specific questions from other colleagues worldwide.

  • Manage legal trade controls, data privacy, litigation and digital, risks, and general liabilities, coordinated with other Legal departments.

  • Commitment to and focus on supporting team efficiencies and simplifications to deliver affordable legal services and the most value and impact to Shell businesses.

  • Stay up to date on (IP) legislative and case law developments and be able to communicate these to stakeholders.

  • Leading by example by behaving in accordance with the Shell Core Values in everyday activities

  • Accountable for protecting Shell’s rights and reputation.

What we need from you

  • You must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

  • Law degree and admission to a US state bar is required.

  • Admission or the ability to be admitted to the Texas State Bar.

  • Admission to practice before the USPTO.

  • Experience with IP law, including in relation to digital and IT matters.

  • At least 5 years of experience with IP agreements/transactions and/or IP litigation.

  • Demonstrated ability to be a legal integrator and independently lead the legal drafting and negotiation of a technology agreement and the ability to lead a project to completion.

  • Ability to work both individually and as part of a team, with both internal and external global stakeholders.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Possess and have demonstrated good influencing and negotiating skills.

  • Ability to update and simplify templates and guidance notes in support of changing legislation or changing IP and business landscapes and support further efficiency and legal tech efforts of the team.

The base salary range for this position is $122,000.00 - $182,000.00 per year.  Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave to birthing mothers, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents. Additionally, employees are eligible for disability leave for up to 52 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay.
