Job Description:

The Enhanced Problem-Solving Team (EPST) is a new capability built into the SMDS organization to accelerate the Site’s progress in resolving key reliability issues through structured problem solving. As a Reliability Engineer (EPST)

you will be accountable to deliver the Shell MDS reliability ambition and drive step changes in substantially improving the Site’s reliability and availability by executing thorough and quality investigations into top process engineering threats and effectively resolving them with key stakeholders at the Site.

You will take ownership of the top threats assigned to you, providing understanding into the true reason for threats to reliable operations of processing units using the principles of Causal Learning (RCA), develop the Cause and Effect of threats and creating clear and consistent alignment around them utilizing the Group Risk Assessment Matrix. You will also be responsible for identifying mitigation options that effectively eliminate these threats, driving continuous learning, improvement, and action into the Site’s standard work to ensure that the solutions implemented are sustainable.

What’s the role?  

You will report to the Reliability Manager. You will be an individual contributor with significant collaboration and coaching support roles.

  • Execute consistent, quality use of Causal Learning methods to investigate, problem solve, recommend interim mitigation and long-term solutions for:
  • Complex threats requiring deeper/more focused investigation.
  • Top site MTOs / HSSE risks
  • Threats that impact more than one unit
  • Repeat failures that are Big Hits resulting in Unplanned Controllable Downtime
  • Reliability issues that have significant impact on business i.e LOPC, maintain margin.
  • Threats where there is resource limitation on Causal Learning (RCA) within other teams.
  • Threats that can be mitigated with operational/maintenance procedure change rather than capital investment.
  • Threats where multidisciplinary evaluation is required.
  • Understand the reason for threats to reliable operation of production units using the principle of Causal Learning (RCA), connecting the dots to comprehensively understand the cause and effect of threats that may have origins or impacts outside of a singular assigned unit.
  • Collect and analyze equipment maintenance, performance, and reliability data to develop patterns and develop hypothesis for use in investigations. This includes development of equipment failure timeline to support investigations.
  • Use Manage Threats & Opportunities processes to ensure that these threats and all agreed-upon actions are accurately captured and progressed to completion according to priority.
  • Develop, maintain and continuously improve procedures, work instructions and work plan to ensure all documentation are of high quality, reviewed timely and that procedure users are fully aligned and comply to requirements outlined. Monitor the implementation of solutions to assess effectiveness.

  • Effectively communicate key learnings to the asset at all levels of the organization, providing coaching to site staff on measures to sustainable prevent failures and embed learning.
  • Undertake special assignments or tasks as directed by Reliability Manager.

What do we need from you? 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline or Equivalent with 6+ years of oil & gas experience
  • Experience in developing, executing and/or driving process engineering, troubleshooting, reliability improvement strategies, tactics, root cause analysis, causal learning, or investigations in a manufacturing environment.
  • High capacity for work, highly skilled in core Skillpool competencies, trained in Causal Learning, willingness to take ownership of problems from identification to resolution, willingness to cross “traditional” functional lines to resolve problems.
  • Experience providing effective coaching, collaboration and excellent communication skills.
