Job Description
PBF Energy Inc. (NYSE:PBF) is one of the largest independent refiners in North America, operating, through its subsidiaries, oil refineries and related facilities. We are a growing organization seeking a talented Light Ends & Distillate Coordinator to join our team as a pivotal member here at PBF Energy. This role is located at Torrance Refining Company in Torrance, CA.
JOB SUMMARY
The Light Ends & Distillate Coordinator is responsible for leading the execution of the short term (<90-day) schedule for light ends (C5-) and distillates (diesel fuel, jet fuel) consistent with the monthly Refinery Operating Plan (ROP). In addition, this Coordinator is responsible for identifying medium- and long-term optimization opportunities. The Light Ends & Distillate Coordinator works closely with the Operations Business Teams, other members of the Economics & Planning Team (Economists, other Coordinators), the Commercial Organization (Traders, Schedulers, Marketers), and the Logistics Organization to assess current market conditions, equipment availability, supply chain limitations, and commercial constraints, developing operating signals as appropriate. Those signals include operating modes (jet vs. diesel), LPG rail and truck movements, refinery fuel management, etc.
This is an intense and exciting position at the center of critical decision-making for Refinery Management, working across organizational boundaries to maximize profitability and deliver refinery performance consistent with the ROP. The ever-changing nature of variables involved, the competing priorities of all interested parties, the rapidity with which decisions must be made, and the importance of clear communication make this position suitable only for well-qualified candidates. During periods of abnormal operation, occasional after-hours consultation with the Operations Shift Teams is expected.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily activities (including weekends during abnormal operations):
- Review past-24-hour unit operating performance with Refinery Shift Superintendent, Unit Superintendents, Console Shift Supervisors, Process Engineers, and members of the Economics & Planning Team. The focus of these interactions is on closing performance gaps compared to targets.
- Review light ends and distillate inventory and status (build, draw, still) and compare against operating envelope targets (minimum inventory, minimum / maximum rail cars, etc.) and expected changes based on unit operations.
- Balance operating constraints, inventories, and market information to set operating priorities that maximize profitability while supporting safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible operation.
- Monitor critical qualities for blend components and products; proactively respond to developing deviations.
- Lead tactical (signal-calling) meetings for Operations and Commercial groups whenever light ends or distillate issues are in play.
- Communicate refinery operating changes using the light ends and distillate sections of the Daily Refinery Strategy & Whitelines to Operations, Commercial (Traders, Schedulers), Logistics, and Technical Services (Process Engineering) groups.
- Ensure unit rates that are being reported are as accurate as possible and work with Process Engineers to ensure consistency.
- Update refinery runout spreadsheets and other tools used to forecast unit operations, product movements, and inventories.
- Lead weekly Key Performance Indicator meeting for LPG truck and all rail operations.
- Identify less-than-optimal refinery operation (e.g., molecules in lower value dispositions), and work with Operations group and Process Engineers on medium-term initiatives to capture the lost margin.
- Own the long-term strategy for light ends and distillate optimization at the Refinery, including identification of debottleneck projects.
- Serve as the primary Refinery contact for the third-party in-plant rail scheduler.
- Serve as primary Refinery contact for the PBF Commercial Group on issues relating to light ends and distillate production and movement, along with LPG truck, and all rail (LPG, Spent Caustic, Catalyst, etc.) operations.
- Update various databases and spreadsheets to document refinery unit performance (monthly throughput, maximum demonstrated throughput, constraints, etc.)
- Track and evaluate refinery performance vs. the ROP for the light ends and distillate pools. This includes calculating monthly Lost Profit Opportunity associated with discrete or on-going less-than-optimal refinery operation.
- Provide support for Light Ends and Distillates improvement projects.
- Serve on the Product Quality Council as primary owner of LPG and distillate quality issues.
- Develop shutdown / slowdown and restart / ramp-up guidelines for planned and unplanned unit downtimes pertaining to light ends and distillates. Use Unit Impact Tool to evaluate the potential for other refinery and supply chain impacts.
- Serve as main contact for PBF Natural Gas group on estimated natural gas consumption and required purchases.
- Serve as backfill for other members of the Economics & Planning team, primarily the Refinery Operations Coordinator and/or Refinery Economist.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering; Chemical Engineering preferred.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in an oil refinery in Technical Services (i.e., Operations Support / Process Engineering) roles; at least two Operations Support experiences preferred in different parts of refinery operation.
- Strong knowledge of typical refinery process units, interunit connectivity, utility systems (refinery fuel gas balance), and internal / external logistics (tankage alignment, shipping, intermediate product transfer options, rail operations); specific knowledge of Torrance hardware and configuration preferred.
- Ability to learn and manage within evolving operational constraints, all while keeping in mind the overall objective of maximizing margin safely and reliably.
- Ability to make quick, high-quality decisions with best available information, including at odd hours without full access to usual advisors or reference material.
- Basic knowledge of operational and financial risk management as applied to contingency planning and inventory target-setting.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Able to provide clear communication and strong leadership with no direct authority. Will be expected to interact routinely with Process Engineers; members of the Operations, Economics & Planning, Commercial, and Logistics groups; and members of Senior Management.
