As part of the Australia Economics team, the role provides high quality Economic analysis and decision relevant insight to  Shell’s West Australian assets covering major project Investment decision making, Operational decisions, Commercial positioning (LNG Sales and Purchase Agreements, Tolling Agreements, Asset Strategy, JV Economics alignment etc.) and various business deliverables while also providing support to the wider Economics team as required.

The Economist role is part of the Economics team and Commercial community in Perth and interfaces with key Asset customers in various locations and businesses as required. The team enables quality business decisions, by serving as “guardians of value”, decision analysts, and trusted advisors. 

What’s the role?

The Economist role is a key enabler in achieving Shell’s objectives, providing high quality economic advice and decision analysis in support of Shell’s business opportunities.

Responsible to follow the Decision Quality model to deliver 1) quality frames and economic evaluations, 2) robust and fit-for-purpose uncertainty and risk analysis (decision analysis support), 3) effective and timely challenge, guidance, and support in making quality investment decisions, 4) Economic discipline sub-team participation.

Operational:

  • Deliver cost effective, timely, professional economics products and insights for Decision Review Boards, Value Assurance Reviews at various Decision Gates, decision documents and business deliverables for projects of moderate to high complexity.

  • Ensure consistency in economic analyses via effective integration and compliance with given standards, guidelines, and processes to enable reliable comparison of opportunities.

  • Challenge, steer and assess decisions involving various project decisions.

Functional

  • Stay integrated with economic activities, best practices and lessons distributed across the globally networked Australia Economic Community and partner with various data providers and key stakeholders.

  • Some support of, and participation in, economics discipline improvement efforts. (Decision Analysis; Standards and Guidelines; Tools; Assurance; Skills; Knowledge Management; etc.)

  • Balance cost, speed, and quality of economic products with Line Manager support to match specific decision (fit-for-purpose).

  • Align with stakeholders to meet short-term project needs while building long term functional health.

For the Economist role, you will thrive in your ability to manage multiple workflows, coordinate conflicting work priorities and deliver high quality on-spec economics products to customers.

What we need from you

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Degree in Business, Commercial, Finance/Economics, Mathematics, Engineering or Geosciences; direct experience in Integrated Gas Value Chains preferred.

  • Solid understanding of economic based performance measures is mandatory with an awareness of accounting a plus.

  • Intermediate to advanced analytical skills, and an ability to organize, analyze and communicate impact of decisions to team members, asset management, partners, and other stakeholders.

  • Exposure to one or more of Asset, New Business Development and Exploration screening and evaluations applying some DA/DQ techniques.

  • Moderate to Advanced Excel spreadsheet skills aligned with best practices.

  • Self-starter with sound judgment, interpersonal skills, and overall stakeholder engagement skills. Willingness and capacity to dive into analytical details, and surface with crisp summary of key insights for complex projects.

  • Results-driven team player comfortable multi-tasking in a diverse and fast-paced work environment across multiple projects; must deliver sufficient quality results on tight timelines, while working effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
