What’s the role?

Shell’s energy trading is a highly complex and integrated business line trading power, gas, and related environmental products across the globe.  The SEAm ETRM Implementation Risk Lead is responsible for providing vision and direction to the project teams implementing Shell Energy’s various ETRM projects to upgrade/transition to new platforms across its related companies in multiple jurisdictions.

This role reports to the Global Head of Energy Market Risk and is a member of the Energy Market Risk Leadership team.  The primary purpose of the role is to act as a subject matter expert ensuring that these multiple and complex projects deliver all business requirements identified by the Risk function as necessary to perform their risk management activity and that the risk teams are able to operate effectively post these upgrades/transitions.  Whilst the role sits within the Market Risk function, the role will also be required to ensure that requirements from the Credit Risk function (and broader Finance where appropriate) are also incorporated into the ETRM projects.

The role works closely with project and risk leads for all parts of the trading management spectrum including a significant IT component, regular discussions with Front Office, Finance, Compliance and Back Office. There will be significant working and collaboration with Americas Commercial business stakeholders.  The role will be a single contributor without direct reports but will have significant influence over multiple stakeholders at all levels of the Trading & Supply organisation.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the Risk Team (and where appropriate broader Finance) provides appropriate requirements to the project teams in the Commercial business who are implementing changes to their ETRMs
  • Ensure that the Risk Teams (and where appropriate broader Finance) have appropriate plans in place to absorb the changes which will be necessary to support changes to the upstream ETRM infrastructure
  • Ensure that appropriate governance is in place and status reporting is provided to key stakeholders including the T&S Chief Risk Officer
  • Act as the primary interface between the project team in the Commercial business and the Risk teams partnering with Commercial IT and the business to deliver the project successfully
  • Capture opportunities from the ETRM upgrades to drive leading practices in risk analytics, reporting and valuation including elimination of manual work wherever possible
  • Review and optimise the processes which support valuation and efficient analysis of risk across the portfolio in light of the ETRM changes which are planned
  • Accelerate digitalization and automation to smooth the flow of information across the business and to remove manual tasks.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement across all levels of the organization by having courage to challenge established processes. This includes identifying inefficiencies in local and global operations and opportunities to streamline and automate shared processes and interfaces.

Competencies

  • Fluent in Market Risk and Operational Risk and able to drive the requirements of each in the planning and implementation of new systems and projects.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills
  • Excellent communication skills. Due to the global nature of the business the role requires communicating using different methods, in a variety of formats, to people in many countries.
  • Team player, good interpersonal skills. Flexible to work with colleagues across numerous time zones with both Market Risk at the Trading Hubs in the Americas, Europe, and Asia but equally the Business Operations centres in Chennai, Manila, Bangalore.
  • Ability to articulate and communicate complex scenarios and ideas in a clear and concise manner whilst understanding the perspective and experience of others.
  • This is a role for a person who brings diversity of thought, who is not afraid to speak up and who is comfortable challenging senior stakeholders.
  • Proactively identify and communicate potential issues with the appropriate teams or stakeholders. Making sure problems raised are followed up and worked on until completion.
  • Able to collaborate and produce good quality output using virtual chains of command.

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or IT; other degrees considered with relevant workplace experience in the energy trading industry. Advanced degrees a plus.
  • 15 or more years of experience within a trading and risk management organization, including a strong understanding of trading, operations, risk, compliance and mid/back-office business processes, policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Thorough understanding of financial, commodity and energy markets; derivative instruments and hedging techniques.
  • Broad knowledge of the basic and complex products traded in the gas, power, and environmental products markets globally. An understanding of the fundamental economics and pricing mechanisms behind these markets, and the trading strategies that relate to them in multiple global jurisdictions.
  • Strong track record as a leader and adviser in implementing new processes with short-dated hard deadlines.
  • Reliable, dependable, and disciplined. Excellent attention to detail, methodical, organized. A trusted partner of the business.
  • Resilient when working under pressure, with the ability to prioritise tasks to meet key deadlines.
  • Good judgement to provide advice, question discrepancies, escalate issues.
  • Continuous improvement mindset; utilizing tools to streamline and automate work to boost efficiency.
  • Candidates shall possess extremely good judgment and shall be able to provide advice, while balancing risk and value on a daily basis.
  • Scientific mindset; identify, investigate, analyse, research, discuss, record, and resolve issues.
